What to Write in a Valentine's Day Card

Valentine’s Day can be a tricky season depending on your season of life and opinion on the holiday. Yes, it’s one of those overly commercialized holidays, but I think any excuse to send a heartfelt letter to encourage someone in God’s love is worth celebrating in some way!

Whether you celebrate with your spouse, significant other, your best friends, or are trying to make it special and fun for you kids, I hope these letter writing prompts and tips help you easily share the love of Christ with those you love this Valentine’s Day Season.

What to Write in a Valentine’s Day Card to your spouse or significant other:

Each of the following prompts/ideas could also be applied to an anniversary card if that’s more your style! Bookmark this blog post to come back to when you sit down to write your next anniversary card.

Prompt #1: Use one or two characteristics of Love found in 1 Corinthians 13 as a jumping off point.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never Fails.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 NIV

There are 14 different characteristics of love found within that passage. If you choose 1-2 different ones each year, this prompt could serve you for years to come!

Here are a few examples that I used in a Valentine’s Day letter to my husband when we were dating/engaged:

Love is Kind

”Whenever someone asks me what I love most about you, I’m quick to answer that it’s your kindness. It’s evident in everything you do towards everyone you meet, especially to those I’m tempted to not give the time of day to.”

It does not dishonor others

”It’s a rare thing to hear you say a poor word against somebody else, and I’m so thankful for that in all of our conversations. In your words to me, you are always loving.”

It is not proud

”You are so wise & intelligent, but you don’t let pride get in the way of your kindness.”

prompt #2: Write about something you’re looking forward to together.

“I can’t wait to enter into this new season of parenthood together with you by my side...”

“I’m so excited to see what the Lord has in store for us as we continue to pursue each other in Him…”

“I’m so looking forward to our travels this year and getting even more quality time with you—it’s my favorite thing!”

Prompt #3 Let them know something you admire about them that you don’t always remember to say.

“I’m always in awe of how you serve both me and those around you with humility and love like [specific example] and [specific example].”

“I don’t say it enough, but I’m so amazed by the ways you have grown this year in [specific thing] and [specific thing]...”

”My love, you are my greatest blessing. In case you ever need reminding, I think you’re an amazing husband and Father…”

Use any of these as a starting off point to spark some inspiration, or combine a short sentence from each prompt together for one deeply heartfelt & romantic card for your love! As always, using specific words and examples go a long way in making a card feel more personal and heartfelt.

What to Write in a Galentine’s Day Card or Friendship Card

God bless Leslie Knope and the writers of Parks & Rec for dreaming up Galentine’s Day—I absolutely love it! I love that the focus of the Valentine’s Day season can be less on romantic love and more so on celebrating the love found in friendship (the “philia” love in Greek).

Given that our Blessed to Have a Friend Like You Card is our best-selling card of all time, I think you all love showing some extra love to your dearest friends too!

Here’s a template that I used when writing some Galentine’s Day letters last year:

“God has truly blessed me through our friendship!
You are such a ________ and _______ friend, walking with me through ______ and ______ with love & kindness.
I always admire how ______ and _______ you are! I don’t know what I’d do without you.
Much love,
[Your Name]”

a template for your go-to coffee or brunch date friend:

“I hope some coffee shop get togethers and heart to hearts are in our future!
Time with you always fills my cup! (pun intended)
Until then, know that I am praying for __________ and _________ for you!
Much love,
[Your Name]”

Tip: For an extra little gift, slip in an encouraging sticker you know they’ll love and/or a gift card to a local coffee shop that you visit together. You can easily slide these into your card and not pay any extra postage!
