What to Write in an Easter Card
Our American culture definitely places a much greater emphasis on the Christmas season, but Easter is truly meant to be the highest holiday and celebration in the church—for it is in the resurrection of Jesus that our entire faith and hope rests!
For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
1 Corinthians 15:16-19 NIV
If this is the case, sending Easter cards should be just as important as sending Christmas cards, don’t you think? Plus, sending a handwritten Easter card is an excellent option if you missed out on sending Christmas cards amidst all the holiday stress.
But since sending Easter cards are not as common of a practice, it can be hard to know what to say, and hard to find a beautiful or meaningful card to send. I pray this blog post helps give you all the ideas, prompts, and meaningful card options to get you started in sharing the hope of our risen Savior this Easter.
Whom to send an Easter card to
Neighbors, friends, or family you’d like to invite to church for Easter. Try to send your card a week or two ahead of time if it’s for this purpose!
Someone you know that’s in need of encouragement & hope (aren’t we all?). This could be a for a variety of reasons, but anyone grieving, walking through cancer, or struggling with depression are especially good to keep in mind. This can also include shut-ins: those struggling with health or other circumstances that keep them from gathering with their church body or family for Easter. (Ask your Pastor if there are any members that could be cheered by a thoughtful card.)
Someone you haven't seen or heard from in a while but would like to reach out to and reconnect with—a holiday is always a great excuse to do so!
WHAT TO WRITE IN An Easter CARD
A COUPLE of QUICK Easter CARD WRITING TIPS:
Keep the hope of Christ as the center, even if writing to a non-believer. Though they may not share your beliefs, everyone feels cared for when they receive a personalized, hand written card, and perhaps it can plant a seed that they are indeed cared for by God.
Include scripture! Here are a few verses to consider including:
Christ has indeed been raised from the dead! (1 Corinthians 15:20)
He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. (Matthew 28:6)
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. (1 Peter 1:3)
But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. (Acts 2:24)
I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. (Job 19:25)
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57)
Consider using the sentiment on the front of the card (i.e. Risen Indeed, In Christ Alone My Hope is Found, My Redeemer Lives) to inspire what you write on the inside as a jumping off point.
Here are a few templates, tips, and prompts to get you started if you struggle with what to write in an Easter card. Tailor these to fit your own voice, or just use them to get the inspiration flowing as you sit down to write!
Easter Card to invite someone to Church:
“[Recipient Name],

[add name of church and address or website if necessary]
-[Your Name (and phone number to keep connecting)]”
Easter CARD FOR THOSE in need of hope & encouragement:
Here is a template based off of an Easter card I sent last year.
“You and your family have been in our prayers daily. We so admire your faith and all the ways you faithfully serve our church family. We are praying for strength (both physically and spiritually) as you walk through [specific thing] and are praying for [specific thing]. Through the uncertainty and unknown, thanks be to God that we can KNOW that our Redeemer lives. I pray this can be a comfort and blessing to you this Easter season.
“I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.” (Job 19:25)
With love,
[your Name]”
Easter Card for those Grieving:
I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: it’s important to highlight the hope that Jesus brings in the midst of darkness, but important to not try to “cheer them up” when writing a card to someone grieving. They need to know that they’re seen in their grief, be reminded that you care, and that our Savior died and rose again because He cares too. Keep that as your focus.
Below is just one example:
“[Recipient Name],
Sending hugs, love, and lots of prayer to you & your family this Easter without _________. Death stings. I’m so thankful for a Savior that has taken the sting of death upon himself on the cross, and defeated it through His resurrection. I pray you’re able to find some hope in Him this Easter, friend.
“I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.” (Job 19:25)
Resurrection has come. Resurrection is coming.
Much love in Christ,
[your name (and phone number to offer ongoing support]”
Easter Card for those walking through a hard season:
“[Recipient Name],
I’ve been thinking of you and praying for you often, and wanted to wish you a Happy Easter. I pray you know you are seen, supported, and loved by myself and so many, and that our savior died and rose again because you are seen & loved by Him too.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
Much love in Christ,
[your name (and phone number to offer ongoing support]”
Easter CARD FOR SHUT-INS:
“[Recipient name],
Praying for you and sending you the hope of Christ risen from your [church name] family. We long to worship alongside you again one day, and continue to pray for you that [specific prayer] and [specific prayer].
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)
Happy Easter,
[Your name and phone number to connect more]”
”THINKING OF YOU” or general Easter CARD:
“Happy Easter, friend!
Thinking of you and praying for you often. I hope you’re having a wonderful Easter with your family, celebrating Christ risen with worship, spring weather, and all the best Easter food.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)
Much love,
[your name]”
Want to keep it short & sweet?
Below is a great template for this. Use whichever “Easter” scripture passage you like best and add a short Easter blessing:
“Happy Easter!
He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. (Matthew 28:6)
Praise be to God for this wonderful news we get to celebrate each year!
Praying you have a blessed Easter celebrating the hope of Christ risen with your church & family.
Much love,
[your name]”
